Warwick Rotarians heard from Lee Pound, a volunteer with “Tools With A Mission”, (TWAM), a Christian Charity which collects unwanted usable tools. President Dick Dixon, who helps to refurbish the tools, invited Lee to explain the project to his colleagues.
Tools have the Power to transform lives. Lee explained that your unused tools can transform lives in Africa. The charity provides skills training through 500 organisations in sub-Saharan Africa, with successful trainees raising the money to buy a toolkit, donated from the UK and renovated by volunteers.
Rotarians heard that TWAM needs Agricultural and gardening tools, tools for Builders, carpenters, electricians, and plumbers, as well as working computers, so that following training people are able to work for their living. Half of what is sent goes to women who have completed tailoring courses providing them with sewing and knitting machines so they can work in their communities and support their families.
Tools are sorted into Trade kits and sent to the developing world for livelihood creation, the project also supports UK communities though volunteering opportunities and contributes significantly to environmental sustainability by reducing waste and carbon emissions – each year over 400 tonnes of tools are diverted from UK landfill sites.
Thanking Lee for his President Dick Dixon made a donation from the club towards TWAM’s work, and members are considering clearing out their sheds over Christmas!
If you would like to make a donation check out the “Tools wanted” list and collection points on their website www.twam.uk to find out more about their work.
